Esperanza Street update  -  November 8th 2009

Hi Everyone,

First of all, a big, big "thank you" from all of us here at the zoo for your generous donations over the last year. As you can see from the pictures, our family has grown a lot and it seems that the recession has created even more of a problem with abandoned animals. So we have had to make a bigger effort to try and help.

The state has now obligated us to register as a "core zoo" because we actually have more than the legal limit of animals in our care! Which means we get legal inspections etc. to esnure that we meet their requirements for keeping animals. They will send expert vets who will take blood tests to make sure the animals are all healthy. Then they will vaccinate them for all contagious diseases. We will also get advice from them regarding the care of sheep and goats and give us the guidance we need with these specialized animals. It also means we must create a list of any and all animals that we have and may have in the future.... horses, donkeys and cows etc. will all become animals that we can legally protect! And we will.

We are working with a local animal shelter, Asoka. They specialise in dogs and cats mainly and we are busy creating space for some of the animals that they don't have room for, like two sheep! We have agreed to share a lot of our land to help with this effort and this is where you come in…

We need to finish the stable extension and adapt the existing one to meet their requirements which include special drainage, specific dimensions per animal etc. and we need to do a lot of fencing so we can give these animals a safe and comfortable environment. An environment that they deserve!

We have already started planting special trees and shrubs that produce foods that are good for them. We will give them all of our love, care and attention but we need your help to finance the materials and the construction.

In total we need to raise approximately €10,000.00 as soon as possible and every penny you can give will be a big help so please consider giving through our Paypal facility and be a part of this essential moment. The money covers not just materials but labour and ancilliary costs. As an example we need €3,300.00 for the fencing alone and €1,000.00 for the materials to roof the stables properly, not counting the labour!

At the moment we are looking for volunteers to help the people we are already employing and we are supplementing your donations with our own money because we are determined to make this project successful. Fixed salaries at the moment amount to €2,000.00 per month.

You can donate money of course, but expertise, advice and materials are just as valuable so please think about how you can help.
We know from experience that we can count on you so please drag your friends into this and let's make a difference together.

God bless,
Ken & Monica
